Germany made sure of the victory but it came after some early pressure from the Chinese, especially in the form of powerful centre forward Lijun Yu. Yu scored the first and third goal, which had China leading. It wasn?t until the final minute that Heiko Nossek levelled, and then sent Germany ahead by the hooter. Tobias Kreuzmann and Nossek, with his third on counter, had Germany 5-2 in front at halftime. The third period saw Germany maintain control with four goals, two coming from three and four metres, directly in front of goal unguarded. Yong Wang responded for China from two metres. Thomas Schertwitis, who scored while free four metres from goal late in the third, out-muscled his opponent to score on a cross-pass at the start of the fourth. The final goal of the game in a tight quarter was from Yu for his third, just 11 seconds from full time.

Italy went through to the quarter-finals undefeated with the win over Greece. Alessandro Calcaterra opened the scoring from centre forward for Italy but Greece went 2-1 up when Konstantinos Loudis scored on extra. Goals were swapped, then two more goals to Italy completed an interesting opening period. Loudis scored again on extra for 4-4 but five minutes later Alberto Angelini drove and waved the ball for nearly five seconds among a sea of Greek arms to score at 1:15 for 5-4. In the third period, Dimitrios Mazis scored from the narrowest angle on deep right-hand catch for 5-5. But there the scoring dies for Greece as Francesco Postiglione scored twice, the second after a timeout and on extra. Roberto Calcaterra sent in a right-hand backhand and Italy had the game firmly in its grasp by three-quarter time. Bogdan Rath scored from deep left-hand catch at 4:45 in the last, and again at 0:39 from the same position for 10-5.
